Chart Highlights: Lorde's "Team" Tops Again

As expected,  Lorde's latest hit "Team" summits the CDS Music Chart Hot 50 for a second straight frame. The track holds at the summit courtesy of a nearly 5% hike in terms of overall points this week. That translates to a total of 94 spins this week (+4). That's just barely above the points scored by the #2 ranking track this week (92), that's also barely below the amount of points that Shakira's "Empire" scored during its final week at #1 (a 1.05% decrease). As noted multiple times, Lorde's "Royals" (her first top 10 single/entry) previously peaked at #8 on the CDS Music Chart Hot 50. It's also worth noting that "Team" topped the list in its 20th week on the chart. That would have tied for "Longest Climb to #1" if this event had happened back in 2013 (with Ellie Goulding's "Figure 8"), but OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" recently completed a 24 week journey to the top slot just a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Katy Perry's "Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)" holds at it's #2 high point for a second straight frame in its 31st week on the chart. Last week, the track completed the second longest run to a peak position in my chart's history. Recently Krewella's "Live For the Night" took 32 weeks to reach it's peak position of #9 just over 2 months ago. It recently exited the Hot 50 just 2 months after reaching #9 (week #40). If "Horse" reaches #1 next week it will tie the record previously set (as well as set a new record for longest climb to #1). If it reaches #1 in two weeks it will set new records for both.

Lady Gaga's "G.U.Y." elevates 5-3, reaching a new peak in week #14. Performances, promotions, radio adds, and lots of buzz helps the track become the artist's 5th top 3 single this week. "Applause", "Do What U Want (feat. R. Kelly)" and "Venus" all peaked at #1, and "Mary Jane Holland" peaked at #3. Additionally, Gaga's other top 10s include: "MANiCURE" which peaked at #7 , "Sexxx Dreams" which reached #8 and "Aura" which previously stopped at #10. That's the most top 10 entries from the same album in history.

Shakira's "Empire" dips 3-4 this week. It recently spent a 4th and final non-consecutive week at #1. Previously, the song had spent 7 consecutive weeks lodged within the top 3. It has spent 1 week outside the top 3 (this week). It has collected about 400 points to date, suggesting that the track will end it's run with over 800 points in the bank. That should be a solid improvement over the final numbers for "Can't Remember to Forget You" (the singer's previous single) which started out strong but collapsed somewhat quickly. The latter track only spent 2 weeks within the top 3 (both at #3).

OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" slides to its lowest position since the first 3 weeks of December 2013 (it spent 3 weeks at #5 during that time frame) by dropping 4-5. It had an incredible streak of 11 non-consecutive weeks at #2 and 2 consecutive weeks at #1. This week it spends an 20th consecutive week in the top 5, and a 22nd consecutive week in the top 10. That's the longest run since Lady Gaga's 11 week leader "Applause" logged 26 consecutive weeks (1/2 a year) in the top 10 starting with the chart dated August 22nd (its debut week). "Applause" spent 23 of those 26 weeks in the top 5 and 19 of those in the top 3 (16 in the top 2). "Stars" on the other hand has spent 22 weeks in the top 10 (so far), 20 in the top 5, 15 in the top 3 and 13 in the top 2. At this point it is highly unlikely "Stars" can tally 3 more weeks in the top 5 (which would tie the record also set by "Applause"), though there is a possibility that it will spend 26 (tie) or more weeks in the top 10. At the rate it is dropping, it should close it's top 10 run with 27 weeks in the region.

Disclosure's breakout hit "Latch (feat. Sam Smith)" hikes 7-6, a single position hike . This week it elevates 8% from 76 to 82 spins. In the week prior, it jumped over 65%. The week before that it jumped approximately 475%. As noted in the forecast for this frame, "Latch" had an outside chance of reaching the top 3 this week. That gave it the upper hand, and I had reason to believe that it might even crown as high as #2. Despite this, the song dropped as low as #7 on Thursday. When the final numbers came through, the track had recovered some previously lost ground (just like last week). The question is: How far will this track go?

Beyoncé's "Drunk In Love (feat. Jay Z) slides 6-7. "Drunk" previously tallied a single week in the runner-up position. It slides 1-2 on R&B/Hip Hop Songs after leading the list for a 9th consecutive week.

Pharrell's #1 worldwide smash single "Happy" holds straight at #8, directly opposite the stride it made on last week's chart. What's the matter? Airplay. US radio has literally killed this track. I can't turn on a station without hearing it. Sometimes all the stations in this area play its at the exact same time -- there really is no escape froth monstrous sensation that is "Happy". If this one plays out anything like Robin Thicke's radio promoted "Blurred Lines (which coincidentally featured Pharrell), then "Happy" will close with less than 700 in the bank. "Blurred Lines" was the #2 Song of the Summer, and did well on the Year End list, but it closed below 900 points. Since "happy" didn't even reach the top 5 ("Lines" hit #1 for 2 straight weeks), it is naturel to expect it to close fairly low.

Clean Bandit's worldwide dance anthem "Rather Be (feat. Jess Glynne)" gains 10-9, whilst gaining in points. This week it grows due to a rapidly growing airplay presence on several US radio stations across the country. Expect this track to keep growing strong! If you haven't heard it (US listeners/readers might not have), this worldwide sensation is bringing people back to the dance floor.

John Newman's "Love Me Again" backtracks 9-10, after peaking at a #6 highpoint for a single week. Initially, the track exploded in Newman's native UK and successfully peaked at #1 there. It entered the CDS Music Chart Top 50 right after his debut album, Tribute, saw a release here in the United States.

OneRepublic's "Love Runs Out" starts at #14 this week fueled by a huge opening week of 66 spins. That's the largest start ever for any OneRepublic track and the largest for any track this week. Meanwhile on the other side of things, Lana Del Rey's "West Coast" begins with 40 spins at #28, a much lower start than initially expected. Finally, Katy Perry's "Birthday" surges from #63 to #50, landing in the final slot on the tally with a mere 2 points.
