Chart Highlights: Lorde Tops, Katy Climbs

Lorde's latest hit "Team" summits the CDS Music Chart Hot 50 with a 2-1 rise. The move comes courtesy of a 5% hike in terms of overall points this week. That translates to a total of 90 spins this week (+5). That's just barely above the points scored by the #2 ranking track this week (88), though that's off a noticeable 5.25% from the points scored by last week's #1 single ("Empire" by Shakira). As noted multiple times, Lorde's "Royals" (her first top 10 single/entry) previously peaked at #8 on the CDS Music Chart Hot 50. It's also worth noting that "Team" tops the list in its 20th week on the chart. That would have tied for "Longest Climb to #1" if this event had happened back in 2013 (with Ellie Goulding's "Figure 8"), but OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" recently completed a 24 week journey to the top slot just a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Katy Perry's "Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)" inches 4-2 (a new peak) in its 30th week on the chart. That's a very long time to climb for a track. In fact, it's the second longest time to reach a peak on the chart. Recently Krewella's "Live For the Night" took 32 weeks to reach it's peak position of #9 just over 2 months ago. It recently exited the Hot 50 just 2 months after reaching #9 (week #40).

Shakira's "Empire" dips 1-3, after spending a 4th and final non-consecutive week at #1. To date, the song has spent 7 consecutive weeks lodged within the top 3. It has collected about 345 points to date, suggesting that the track will end it's run with over 800 points in the bank. That should be a solid improvement over the final numbers for "Can't Remember to Forget You" (the singer's previous single) which started out strong but collapsed somewhat quickly. The latter track only spent 2 weeks within the top 3 (both at #3).

OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" slides to its lowest position since the final week of 2013 by dropping 3-4. It had an incredible streak of 11 non-consecutive weeks at #2 and 2 consecutive weeks at #1. This week it spends an 19th consecutive week in the top 5, and a 21st consecutive week in the top 10. That's the longest run since Lady Gaga's 11 week leader "Applause" logged 26 consecutive weeks (1/2 a year) in the top 10 starting with the chart dated August 22nd (its debut week). "Applause" spent 23 of those 26 weeks in the top 5 and 19 of those in the top 3 (16 in the top 2). "Stars" on the other hand has spent 21 weeks in the top 10 (so far), 19 in the top 5, 15 in the top 3 and 13 in the top 2. At this point it is highly unlikely "Stars" can tally 4 more weeks in the top 5 (which would tie the record also set by "Applause"), though there is a possibility that it will spend 26 (tie) or more weeks in the top 10. At the rate it is dropping, it should close it's top 10 run with 27 weeks in the region.

Lady Gaga's "G.U.Y." elevates 8-5, reaching a new peak in week #13. Performances, promotions, radio adds, and lots of buzz helps the track become the artist's 5th top 10 single this week. "Applause", "Do What U Want (feat. R. Kelly)" and "Venus" all peaked at #1, and "Mary Jane Holland" peaked at #3. Additionally, Gaga's other top 10s include: "MANiCURE" which peaked at #7 , "Sexxx Dreams" which reached #8 and "Aura" which previously stopped at #10. That's the most top 10 entries from the same album in history.

Beyoncé's "Drunk In Love (feat. Jay Z) slides 5-6. "Drunk" previously tallied a single week in the runner-up position. It leads R&B/Hip Hop Songs for an 9th consecutive week.

Disclosure's breakout hit "Latch (feat. Sam Smith)" hikes 22-7, a 15 position hike (the highest jumper of the week). This week it elevates 65% from 46 to 76 spins. In the week prior, it jumped over 475%. As noted in the forecast for this frame, "Latch" was lodged in the runner-up position for several days throughout the tracking period this week. That gave it the upper hand, and I had reason to believe that it might even crown #1. Despite this, the song dropped as low as #8 on Thursday. When the final numbers came through, the track had recovered some previously lost ground (as predicted). The question is: How far will this track go?

Pharrell's #1 worldwide smash single "Happy" descends 6-8, directly opposite the stride it made on last week's chart. What's the matter? Airplay. US radio has literally killed this track. I can't turn on a station without hearing it. Sometimes all the stations in this area play its at the exact same time -- there really is no escape froth monstrous sensation that is "Happy". If this one plays out anything like Robin Thicke's radio promoted "Blurred Lines (which coincidentally featured Pharrell), then "Happy" will close with less than 700 in the bank. "Blurred Lines" was the #2 Song of the Summer, and did well on the Year End list, but it closed below 900 points. Since "happy" didn't even reach the top 5 ("Lines" hit #1 for 2 straight weeks), it is naturel to expect it to close fairly low.

John Newman's "Love Me Again" backtracks 7-9, after peaking at a #6 highpoint for a single week. Initially, the track exploded in Newman's native UK and successfully peaked at #1 there. It entered the CDS Music Chart Top 50 right after his debut album, Tribute, saw a release here in the United States.

Clean Bandit's worldwide dance anthem "Rather Be (feat. Jess Glynne)" dips 9-10, despite gaining in points. This week it grows due to a rapidly growing airplay presence on several US radio stations across the country. Expect this track to keep growing strong! If you haven't heard it (US listeners/readers might not have), this worldwide sensation is bringing people back to the dance floor.

Come back for the chart!
