Chart Highlights: 5SOS Enters, Disclosure & Gaga Climb
This week's chart is loaded with new entries, switches and a whole lot of of wacky numbers! Let's start off with the penthouse position and work our way down to the end of the top 10. After that I'll give you a sneak peak at other notable happenings on the chart. Then you can check out the full, 50 position chart later this weekend!
In the #1 position, we find Shakira's "Empire" locking in a 4th overall week at #1 (2nd in a row). Fueled by the bright prospects of the track's brand new music video, "Empire" was able to maintain 95% of the points it received last week (97 vs 94). That's a huge hold for the track, which just a few weeks ago was on the verge of a complete collapse after spending 2 weeks at #1 before crumbling. Surprisingly, "Empire" has built a prominent fan base in the United States, suggesting that votes will keep this single alive for longer than expected.
Lorde inches 3-2 with "Team", sending OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" to its lowest position since the first week of 2014. In more explicit terms, "Stars" had previously spent 11 non-consecutive weeks at #2 and 2 weeks at #1 this year, and amazing feat that likely won't be matched later this year. "Team" benefits from a push on radio this week, and rises 78-85 in terms of weekly points (a 9% increase in chart points from last week).
As previously mentioned, OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" slides to its lowest position since the first week of 2014 by dropping 2-3. It had an incredible streak of 11 non-consecutive weeks at #2 and 2 consecutive weeks at #1. This week it spends an 18th consecutive week in the top 5, and a 20th consecutive week in the top 10. That's the longest run since Lady Gaga's 11 week leader "Applause" logged 26 consecutive weeks (1/2 a year) in the top 10 starting with the chart dated August 22nd (its debut week). "Applause" spent 23 of those 26 weeks in the top 5 and 19 of those in the top 3 (16 in the top 2). "Stars" on the other hand has spent 20 weeks in the top 10 (so far), 18 in the top 5, 15 in the top 3 and 13 in the top 2. At this point it is highly unlikely "Stars" can tally 5 more weeks in the top 5 (which would tie the record also set by "Applause"), though there is a possibility that it will spend 26 (tie) or more weeks in the top 10. At the rate it is dropping, it should close it's top 10 run with 27 weeks in the region.
After spending 2 weeks at #5, Katy Perry's "Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)" returns to its #4 peak position (moves 5-4). To date the track has logged 3 weeks in the spot, the most of any artist in the position (Beyoncé logged 2 weeks) in history. It tallies a 15th week in the top 10, the longest time in the region for any song by Katy Perry (her #1 peaking "Unconditionally" spent 13 weeks in the region). It is now her 2nd best performing track of all time, above "Walking On Air" but below "Unconditionally". Some of the gains the track displayed this week can be attributed to the fact that Katy Perry confirmed the release of "Birthday" as the 4th single off her multi-platninum album PRISM. "Birthday" has yet to chart on the CDS Music Chart Hot 50, but makes strides underneath it by lifting 99-63 in its 3rd week of being on the CDS Music Chart playlist (debuted at #78). This was due to the fact that the track scored chart points points from being heavily promoted by DJs within the past month. Please note that all chart positions below the top 50 aren't generally recorded. All ranks below #50 don't count toward a song's chart run.
Beyoncé's "Drunk In Love (feat. Jay Z) slides 4-5, swapping places with Katy Perry's "Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)" which returned to its peak position this week. "Drunk" previously tallied a single week in the runner-up position. It leads R&B/Hip Hop Songs for an 8th consecutive week.
Pharrell's #1 worldwide smash single "Happy" elevates 8-6 on the chart, avoiding the downward trend that Lorde's "Royals" made during a similar frame back in 2013.Fueled by monstrous track sales, enormous airplay gains and all around exposure, the track continues to inch toward the top 5. While it's moving over 1/4 million copies per week, the track is becoming over saturated. Unfortunately for Pharrell, I tend to stop listening to songs that get over played. It's highly likely that this song peaks fairly soon.
John Newman's "Love Me Again" backtracks 6-7, after peaking at a #6 highpoint for a single week. Initially, the track exploded in Newman's native UK and successfully peaked at #1 there. It entered the CDS Music Chart Top 50 right after his debut album, Tribute, saw a release here in the United States.
Lady Gaga's "G.U.Y." shoots 12-8, reaching a new peak in week #12. Performances, promotions, radio adds, and lots of buzz helps the track become the artist's 8th top 10 single this week. "Applause", "Do What U Want (feat. R. Kelly)" and "Venus" all peaked at #1, "Mary Jane Holland" peaked at #3, "MANiCURE" peaked at #7 , "Sexxx Dreams" reached #8 and "Aura" previously stopped at #10. That's the most top 10 entries from the same album.
Clean Bandit's worldwide dance anthem "Rather Be (feat. Jess Glynne)" hikes 10-9 this week due to a rapidly growing airplay presence on several US radio stations across the country. Expect this track to keep growing strong! If you haven't heard it (US listeners/readers might not have), this worldwide sensation is bringing people back to the dance floor.
Shakira's "Can't Remember To Forget You (feat. Rihanna)" adjusts down 7-10 on this week's tally, closing out this week's top 10. The track previously peaked in the #3 position for 3 weeks, the most in history. As I previously noted in my album review for Shakira's new disc, this track is actually one of her most underwhelming new tracks. So far, it has banked a decent 545 points. Depending on how the song's track record plays out while it swirls down the "teen vortex", the track could finish with anywhere between 600-800 (that assumes it leaves the top 10 next week). If you are a new reader and don't know what I'm referring to: the "teen vortex" is an area on the chart where slow rising songs often peak and where dropping songs can quickly tumble. As an example, "Applause" peaked at #1 for a record smashing 11 weeks but quickly fell 9-14-20 and now ranks below the top 30 as a result.
Lower on the list, Disclosure's breakout hit "Latch (feat. Sam Smith)" hikes 46-22, a 24 position increase. It gains by a whooping 475% elevating from 8 points to 46 points this week. While that's not a big of an increase as Lady Gaga's "Venus" (42-1 with a 1587% increase), the huge moves suggests that Disclosure will be a group to watch in coming weeks.
5 Seconds of Summer opens at #43 with "She Looks So Perfect", aided by a huge twitter voting presence and the release of the group's highly successful EP which arrived on the market on Tuesday. With the opening, 5SOS becomes just the 3rd all boy band (teenage; Maroon 5 doesn't count) to reach the Hot 50 chart. Debut singles from One Direction and The Wanted peaked at #17 and #1 respectively (both in 2012).
Other notable chart moves: Iggy Azalea bounds 35-30 with first charting single "Fancy" in week #3. "Fancy" features former charting artist Charli XCX, who featured on Icona Pop's smash debut track "I Love It" which rose to #1 almost exactly 1 year ago. Sia's "Chandelier" rebounds 42-40 after crashing 31 positions last week (11-42), the biggest drop of a song in history.
