Another Year of Hits: Sweet Sixteen

So as most of you guys know, I am starting my 3rd year online (my 2nd year anniversary of being at this site is exactly 1 week from now!). This year (like last), I am hosting a bracket style face off between 32 songs that peaked between #1-4 on the CDS Music Chart Hot 50 from charts dated April 26th, 2013 through April 10th, 2014. The first round of bracket style voting has come to a close, and now I'm here to present to you the 16 tracks that will be battling in round 2, this year's Sweet 16. First let's recap the winners and losers from round 1. Voting for round 2 will begin soon! Stay tuned. The original bracket is below:

On the upper left of the bracket, 2 week #1 leader, "Figure 8" by Ellie Goulding completely wiped out fellow #1 "Only Teardrops" by Emmelie De Forest. "Teardrops" was the winning track in the 2013 Eurovision contest, and quickly rose to #1 after winning back in May. "Figure 8" took 81% of the votes in the match up, the biggest landslide win of this year's competition (though another match up on the right got close to that level). "Teardrops" scored a mere 19% of votes cast within this matchup and a mere 1.3% of all votes cast in any matchup (the highest was "Figure 8" with 5.8%).

Facing off against last year's Song of the Summer ("Red Cup" by Katy Tiz), Macklemore's #1 single "Can't Hold Us" should have had a really hard time collecting votes. Unfortunately for "Red Cup", "Can't Hold Us" is more widely known so it was able to scoop 54% of the votes cast in this match up to win it. "Red Cup" has been having some issues in voting polls, failing to pick up either of the two awards it was nominated for last year during the 2nd annual CDS Music Chart Awards. "Cup" took just 2.% of all votes cast in any match up.

"Figure 8" will be pitted against "Can't Hold Us" in round 2. Both "Red Cup" and "Only Teardrops" are now out of the competition.

In the next match up, "Blurred Lines (feat. Pharrell & T.I.)" by Robin Thicke stirred up some Twitter controversy when it was faced off against "Thinking About You (feat. Ayah Marar)" by Calvin Harris. I had several voters complaining that "Blurred Lines" was even selected to participate in the competition. To that: "I'm sorry. I liked "Blurred Lines" last year. This competition was created facing off tracks that I liked from the past year. "Blurred Lines" even hit #1 last year. I can't just not include it." Moving on. It doesn't even matter, because "Thinking About You (feat. Ayah Marar)" by Calvin Harris won the match up with an overwhelming 68% of the votes. "Lines" picked up just 32% (about 1/2 of what the other track picked up). "Thinking About You (feat. Ayah Marar)" by Calvin Harris picked up 4% of all votes cast in any match up, relatively high.

Lady Gaga's 11 week #1 single "Applause  faced off against 4 week leader "The Monster (feat. Rihanna) by Eminem. Unfortunately for Rihanna and Eminem, "The Monster" was no match for "Applause". "Applause" won this battle with just 56% of the vote. "The Monster", a favorite to move on, retires with just 3% of all the votes cast in round 1.

"Applause" will face "Thinking About You" in round 2. "The Monster" and "Blurred Lines" are now out.

The next match up saw "Summertime Sadness" pitted against Katy Perry's unstoppable hit single "Roar". Both peaked at #3 on the CDS Music Chart Hot 50 back in early fall 2013. "Roar" was the initial favorite to win but in the final hours of voting, "Summertime Sadness" pulled through and captured the win, claiming 53% of the overall vote by the end of the voting period.

"What If?" by Vita Chambers easily beat out competitor "Fail In Love" by Sharon Doorson. "If" captured a huge 72% of the votes in this match up, one of the largest trumps this year.

"What If?" will face "Summertime Sadness" in round 2. "Roar" and "Fail In Love" are now out.

"Clarity (feat. Foxes)" by Zedd wiped "People Like Us" by Kelly Clarkson in a battle that had an expected outcome. "Clarity" scooped 64% of the votes in this match up, a fairly high percentage. The final result was obvious considering that "People Like Us" wasn't nearly as commercially successful as "Clarity" was in the United States.

Katy Perry's "Walking On Air" blew past Macklemore's #2 peaking "Same Love (feat. Mary Lambert)" with a strong 69% of the votes cast in the match up. "Walking On Air" is the first of 4 Katy Perry tracks to move on. "Roar" was already eliminated.

"Walking On Air" and "Clarity" will duke it out in the next round. "People Like Us" and "Same Love" are officially out of the competition.

On the other side of the bracket, "Hold On" by NERVO took a weak 54% of the vote, narrowly beating out Mia Martina's only entry this year, the #4 peaking "La La..". "Hold On" also peaked at #4 back in April 2013.

Katy Perry's #4 peaking "Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)" easily trumped the only entry from last year's winning artist, Loreen. Said artist's #4 peaking "We Got the Power" was easily defeated in this match up, scoring just 29% of the votes cast. "Horse" is Katy's 2nd single to advance ("Roar" has already been eliminated).

"Dark Horse" and "Hold On" will duke it out in the next round. "We Got the Power" and "La La..." are officially out of the competition.

Lady Gaga's "Mary Jane Holland" lost horribly to Pitbull's "Timber (feat. Ke$ha)", with just 21% of the votes cast in this match up. This loss for Lady Gaga is the first out of 4 entries in the competition.

Lorde's "Team" scored just 51% of the votes cast in its match up against Beyoncé' #2 peaking "Drunk In Love (feat. Jay Z)". That's the closest match up of the entire competition. For most of the voting period, Beyoncé's track was barely leading but was eventually overtaken by Lorde's fast rising track.

"Team" and "Timber" will duke it out in the next round. "Mary Jane Holland" and "Drunk In Love" are officially out of the competition.

OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" overtook Lady Gaga's "Venus" with a huge 73% of the votes cast in this match up.

"Mind Controller" by Ayah Marar edged out Katy Perry's "Unconditionally" with 57% of the votes in its match up.

"Mind Controller"  and "Counting Stars" will move on to the next round. "Venus" and "Unconditionally" are officially out of the competition.

Avril Lavigne's "Rock N Roll" (which peaked at #2 on the CDS Music Chart Hot 50 for a record smashing 5 non consecutive weeks), just barely beat out Vita Chambers' #2 peaking "Masquerade" with a mere 57% of the votes cast in this match up. Vita Chambers had 1 track that advanced to round 2 ("What If?") but was less fortunate in this situation.

In the 16th and final match up in the competition, "Do What U Want (feat. R. Kelly)" by Lady Gaga took 62% of the vote against "Empire" by Shakira (the latin singer's 1st ever #1 single).

"Rock N Roll" and "Do What U Want" will move on to the next round. "Empire" and "Masquerade" are officially out of the competition.

Here are the ranks of the tracks so far. Only the bottom 16 tracks (songs that are out of the competition) are ranked.

32. "Only Teardrops" by Emmelie De Forest (Last Place)
31. "Mary Jane Holland" by Lady Gaga
30. "We Got the Power" by Loren
29. "Same Love (feat. Mary Lambert)" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
28. "Fail In Love" by Sharon Doorson
27. "Blurred Lines (feat. Pharrell Williams & T.I.)" by Robin Thicke
26. "Venus" by Lady Gaga
25. "People Like Us" by Kelly Clarkson
24. "Empire" by Shakira
23. "Masquerade" by Vita Chambers
22. "Unconditionally" by Katy Perry

20. "Red Cup" by Katy Tiz
19. "The Monster" by Rihanna
18. "Roar" by Katy Perry
17. "Drunk In Love (feat. Jay Z)" by Beyoncé

Come back to vote in round 2!
