Welcome to the 9th installment in the long running series "CDS Picks"! Today I will be focusing on my picks for what new singles I think are hot this week. Sit back, relax and enjoy the 9th installment of "CDS Picks"!
Ariana Grande - "Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea)"
While the latest track from Ariana Grande hasn't seen official release yet, we've heard several snippets so far. As promised, Grande has shifted away from the Pop/R&B styles we heard on the singer's debut studio release in 2013. For "Problem", Ariana recruited swift paced German producer Zedd (known for his own tracks "Clarity", and "Stay the Night" as well as selected Lady Gaga songs), and fellow new musician Iggy Azalea. In addition to the rap verse provided by Azalea, Big Sean makes a cameo appearance during one line of the track's chorus. "Problem" will be performed for the first time live on Sunday, April 27th at the 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards and will be available on digital retailers immediately following. The track will supposedly be serviced as early as the next day (Monday, April 28th) to US Pop and Mainstream Top 40 formatted stations. So far, the track really is shaping up well.
BOOTS - "Dreams (feat. Beyoncé)"
New producer BOOTS, who famously participated in the surprise release of Beyoncé's 5th studio album back in December 2013, has coincidentally recruited the veteran crooner to join him on his new track titled "Dreams". "Dreams" is a thumper, and it is already getting support from critics across the nation. The track leads off the producer's highly anticipated "WinterSpringSummerFall" mixtape, which will finally be unveiled this December.
"Dreams" is a bouncing (yet surprisingly smooth) R&B track with a flair of magic from the Queen B. While it was a fresh addition to the newcomer's (BOOTS) collection, it is the only track that will be included on the mixtape that hasn't already been heard. It is not for sale on iTunes but can be purchased exclusively through BOOTS' official Soundcloud page.
Ellie Goulding - "Goodness Gracious (The Chainsmokers Remix)"
Ellie Goulding's follow up to worldwide sensation "Goodness Gracious" bombed after release in limited key markets. Thankfully, The Chainsmokers (coming off their recent success with solo hit "#Selfie"), have remixed the track and released it on iTunes. While I was hesitant to even give the new remix a listen (given my feelings toward "#Selfie"), but I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that the remix was actually pretty solid.
It felt polished, more unique and is more interesting than the original version of the track, which (while was still noteworthy), felt a little too lackluster and underwhelming. So far the remix looks to be helping the original track, entering the US iTunes Top 200 most downloaded list.
Ella Henderson - "Ghost"
As an X Factor UK finalist back in 2011, Henderson was initially a favorite to win the competition. She was notoriously eliminated when she and eventual winner James Arthur landed in the bottom two. This stirred up some unwanted controversy, but Ella was still able to secure a contract. After numerous delays and changes, "Ghost" was confirmed as her debut single.
Penned by Ryan Tedder (lead singer of OneRepublic), the track is genius. While it won't receive attention in the United States market, it should explode with success in Ella Henderson's native UK when released for download on June 7th. It will be huge.
James Arthur - "Get Down"
Speaking of the 2011 X Factor UK winner, James Arthur also appears on this week's list. Though he was dropped from Syco (his label) and fired by Simon Cowell, "Get Down" is just starting to breakthrough for me. It is in truth, the first track I can listen to by him, and really one of the only ones that deserves praise and success. Unfortunately for James, the United States will again pass over this diamond in the rough and it won't be a hit in his native UK because of his remarks that got him fired. Don't mess around with Simon Cowell!
