Chart Highlights: Lady Gaga's "Applause" Tops "Rock n Roll"

Lady Gaga's "Applause" spends a third consecutive week atop the list with 94 plays. Last week the song racked up 109 plays, meaning this week's total is down by an estimated 14% (-13.76%). The total play count this week is also off by an estimated 3% (-3.09%) from the 97 play third week forecast. The new 4th week forecast is 85 plays. That should still be enough to rank #1, though there could be some strong competition from Avril Lavigne's "Rock n Roll". After week 4, the song should stabilize in the mid 80s after hype has died down. This could help it keep it at #1 for a while, although "Swine" (another Lady Gaga song) debuts on September 1st, 2013. Despite not being likely, "Swine" could have an impressive start and overtake "Applause".

As previously mentioned, Avril Lavigne's "Rock n Roll" bumps 3-2 on the tally. The song is still growing in airplay and the extra position jump this week can be attributed to the hype surrounding the critically acclaimed video that was released about two weeks ago. Despite the big play tally (79 spins) that the song carries this week, that total is 15 spins off of the "Applause" total. Despite this, if it continues to grow at a strong pace next week, and "Applause" continues to dip, there is a possibility of the song crowning the list.

Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" moves 4-3 and returns to its peak position. It previously moved 31-3 in the largest rise of that week and the second largest in history, before descending to #4 and returning to #3 this week.

Ayah Marar and Calvin Harris slide 2-4 with former #1 runner "Thinking About You". The song had jumped 12-1 to earn the "Biggest Jump to #1" title, before being replaced by the debut of Lady Gaga's "Applause". It had a very close race this week with "Summertime Sadness" as just 2 plays separated their positions. This week it had its 4th highest airplay week.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis remain at #5 with "Same Love (feat. Mary Lambert)". It becomes the duo's first non number 1 hit. It peaked at #2 for 3 consecutive weeks just recently. This week, the song is able to stay at #5 because of the performance with Jennifer Hudson at the VMAs on Sunday night (8/25/13).

Vita Chambers flies 9-6 with her new promotional single titled "Masquerade. Her previous hit, "Fix You", opened during the last week of December 2012 at No. 10 with 56 plays. It later went on to peak at #1 for 4 consecutive weeks and become one of the biggest songs to ever hit the chart. Following its 3 day start of 68 plays it racks an additional 70 plays (+2.94%). Although this a good second week, it had 4 extra play days (compared to week 1) and was only able to claim 2 more plays. This could be very bad or just mean that the song is stabilizing quickly.

Zedd zooms 11-7 with "Clarity (feat. Foxes)". Aided by a large airplay presence and continuous gains, it claims the "Airplay Gainer" award. It becomes the first top 10 for both Zedd and Foxes. It is also the lone new top 10 entry this week.

Ellie Goulding bumps 10-8 with her newest track "Burn" from the just released re-issue of Halcyon, titled Halcyon Days which hit stores Tuesday, August 27th, 2013. The song follows Ellie's other singles to reach the top 10: "Figure 8" which peaked at #1 for two consecutive weeks, "Lights" and "I Need Your Love (feat. Calvin Harris)" which both stopped at #4. "Anything Could Happen" is also notable for reaching #11 (ugh... so close), and it is also notable that both "Under Control" (peaked #18 so far) and "You, My Everything" (peaked #19 so far) succeeded the song.

Mia Martina eases 6-9 after previously peaking at #4 on the chart with "La La". It became the most voted song of the week on Twitter for the second time in a row. Despite this special increase, the song didn't rack enough airplay to hold up. You can vote every week by tweeting to me here!

The Imagine Dragons slide 7-10 to anchor the end of the upper tier with only top 10 single "Radioactive". This slide will probably cause the song to fall out of the top 20 next week or the week after, as most songs departing the top 10 topple quickly (example: "Can't Hold Us (feat. Ray Dalton)" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis had an excellent run on the chart, but quickly got sucked into the top 20 vortex and ended up dipping 9 positions while departing the top 10. It moved downward 10-19 that week).
