Chart Highlights: Beyoncé "In Love" With the Top 10
We will get to all this Beyoncé stuff in a second. First let's start with what's happening at the summit of the CDS Music Chart Hot 50.
Ayah Marar 'humps' to #1 this week with her 1st solo charting single (and 2nd charting song overall), "Mind Controller". The song, which moves 3-1, is Ayah's 2nd overall #1 single as her guest spot on Calvin Harris' "Thinking About You" propelled her to #1 back in August 2013. This lift comes just weeks after Ayah scored the largest chart re-entry in history when "Mind Controller" rebooted within the top 10 (#6). The only other song to re-enter the chart within the top 10 is "Young" by Tulisa which blasted to #8 back in 2012. Though it captures the summit, overall points for "Controller" were down. The song experienced a 5% dip in chart points which is unusual for a song that spends its first week at #1. Despite this, it has happened on several occasions. In this case, the tumble isn't as severe, as nearly every song in the top 10 dipped by at least 5%.
Holding at #2 for a 6th straight week, OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" breaks the record for "Most Weeks At #2 (Without Reaching #1)". The record was previously held by Avril Lavigne's "Rock N Roll" (5 weeks in 2013). Additionally, the song becomes the only #2 peaking song to spend time behind 3 or more different #1's. Previously, Macklemore's "Can't Hold Us" spent 9 overall weeks at #2 behind 4 different #1's. While Macklemore's song would be the holder of the two previously mentioned records, it ended its 9 week #2 stay by vaulting to the #1 position the following week and staying for an additional 2 weeks. This week, "Counting Stars" is down by 10%, giving Ayah a 4.5% overall point lead.
Last week's tally topper, "Unconditionally" slides 1-3 after a 3 week command. Sliding by a hefty 15%, the song was barely beat by OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" for the #2 position on this week's chart. In fact the margin was so thin that I had to recount the spins multiple times to see which song was actually #2 and which one was #3 for the week.
Despite being down by 9% this week, Shakira's "Can't Remember To Forget You (feat. Rihanna)" inches 5-4 on the tally. Last week, the single became Rihanna's 12th non-consecutive top 5 hit (the most for any artist on this chart so far), and at this point has a chance at becoming the artist's 6th #1 single. As previously mentioned, it is Shakira's only top 10 hit. To date the song has racked up 178 overall points through its first 4 frames.
Please keep in mind that the "votes" (or "points") seen in the video are overall spin figures for that specific week and don't count for a song's year end point calculations. These "votes" help determine the ranking of the songs and the rankings determine the year end points. Weeks at #1 get the most points while weeks at #50 get the least.
Mia Martina slides 4-5 with her 2nd top 5 single "Danse (feat. Dev)". Down by a hefty 14%, the song still held considerably well this week. So far the single has peaked at #4, which is exactly even with Mia Martina's own "La La...", which also peaked at #4 back in mid 2013.
Eminem's previous #1 single, "The Monster (feat. Rihanna)", holds at #6 for a second straight week. That's a great hold considering the sharp 11% point cut it received this week. The song spends a 15th week in the top 10 (its entire run thus far).
The most surprising move of the week comes from Beyoncé and Jay-Z. The husband and wife team's latest collaboration, "Drunk In Love", charges 12-7 on the tally this week. Surprisingly enough, the song is Beyoncé's first ever top 10 hit. This is because Beyoncé was on a hiatus (she gave birth) around the time that my chart first started. Her 5th studio album titled Beyoncé was just released 2 months ago. The single is also Jay-Z's first top 10 entry on the chart. While displaying a 5 position jump, the song remains exactly even with last week's point total, one of the few songs to do so this week.
Lady Gaga dips 7-8 with "Do What U Want (feat. R. Kelly)". The song (which hit #1 for 6 weeks), is starting to suffer from not having an official video and is dropping faster than "Applause". To date it has spent 14 weeks in the top 5 and and records its lowest point scoring week in history (it started with over 200 points in October; a record). The official remix with Christina Aguilera could end up helping the song parallel the success of its predecessor.
Lady Gaga's diamond in the rough "Applause" also records its lowest week in terms of votes and position, and spends it's third week outside of the top 5 with a 8-9 drop. It spent a record 23 weeks in the top 5 (almost 5 weeks at every position) and tallies an 26th week in the top 10 which breaks the record just recently set by Avril Lavigne's "Rock N Roll" (which slides holds at #14 this week).
To round out the chart's top 10, "Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)" remains stationary at #10. The single follows "The One That Got Away" and "Walking On Air" which peaked at #2, "Roar" which peaked at #3, "Wide Awake" which peaked at #5, "Part of Me" which peaked at #8 and most recently "Unconditionally" which has peaked at #1 for 3 weeks thus far.
Come back for the chart!
