"Figure 8" Forever
"... lands her highest charting single with third top 5 hit "Figure 8" as it advances 4-3..."
"... "Figure 8" as it advances 3-1. It takes the record for "Longest Climb to #1 Ever", topping in its 20th week."
"... it stays at #1 for a second week..."
"... Ellie Goulding won 1 [CDS Music Chart] award this year ... it was for "Artist of the Year"..."
"..."Figure 8" came in 2nd place for "Pop Record" .... tied for 2nd place in "Song of the Year".
"... it ["Figure 8"] spent 51 out of 52 weeks on the chart..."
"Congratulations Ellie on your first #1 and first year end #1 [for "Figure 8"]!"
These are just a few of the things that I posted about Ellie Goulding and "Figure 8" throughout 2013. As of the chart dated 2/27/14, "Figure 8" still remains listed. In fact it shoots 38-26. Why? Because the song celebrates it's 60th week within the top 50 (a record) and because it just recently (last week) overtook Maroon 5's #1 single "Payphone (feat. Wiz Khalifa)" as the #2 best performing single in CDS Music Chart history. Yep. With 1418 overall chart points, Goulding's first (and only) #1 single is just 25 points under Rihanna's "Where Have You Been", the #1 best performing single in history. Not to worry, "Figure 8" will easily overtake it within 1-2 weeks and the 1 1/2 year old record will come to an end. Additionally, "Figure 8" might reach the sacred 1500 point barrier that has never been officially crossed (Rihanna's "We Found Love" didn't officially cross). If it manages to cross the barrier, it will become the first ever single to be awarded the Diamond certification.
The question really is, How did a "flop" single become a record breaker and trend setter on CDS?
It all started in December 2012. I was scouring the Official UK Singles Chart and found "Figure 8" at #33. Knowing how the UK Charts work, (first few chart weeks usually dictate) I was surprised to see an Ellie Goulding track so low in it's first few weeks. I had heard it once before when I picked up the album it's included on in stores in October 2012. I listened to the song yet again and I felt like it really connected to me. I was so surprised that I had skipped over it before. At that point I knew it was poised to do some damage but I had no idea it would be a game changer.
It's ability to stay fresh was a trait that helped it survive this long. One that could be more powerful is the fact that I've never ever heard the song on any radio station so the plays were all up to me. It basically couldn't get annoying and I'm not sure it will for quite a while.
Anyway happy 60th week birthday "Figure 8" and congratulations Ellie Goulding! Your 2nd album's 2nd single is the 2nd best performing single to date, was the best performing single of my chart's 2nd year, spent 2 weeks at #1 and had the 2nd most votes for both "Pop Record" and "Song of the Year" at the 2nd annual CDS Music Chart Awards!
That's a whole lot of 2's. Hopefully 1 of those changes soon.
