CDS Picks has officially been retired and will be replaced with a daily, more in-depth look at a single song. This new feature will be dubbed the Pick of the Day.
Charli XCX certainly knows her way around charts worldwide, including the CDS Music Chart Hot 50, but nothing she's ever released on been featured on could have prepared us for "Break the Rules", the second official single from her forthcoming third album, Sucker (October 21st).
"Break the Rules" is easily one of the most instantly lovable electropop tracks of the past year, combining Charli's signature shouting vocals with a building beat that unleashes when the song eventually climaxes. XCX rocks some serious vocal chops in a way that she hasn't ever really done before. "I don't want to go to school/I just wanna break the rules/Boys and girls across the world?Putting on our dancing shoes/Going to the discotechque/Getting higher, getting wrecked/I don't want to go to school/I just wanna break the rules", she sings over her perfectly crafted disco beat. It's a wonderful whirlwind mixture of all of her previous hits wrapped up like a piece of candy.
As a featured artist, she's tallied two top 5 singles on the CDS Music Chart Hot 50, Icona Pop's "I Love It" (which wound up at #1) and Iggy Azalea's "Fancy", which reached #4 in mid 2014. Her first charting solo single, "Boom Clap" has since reached #20. It's highly likely that "Break the Rules" follows suit and becomes a smash on the Hot 50. As of early week numbers, the single has already entered the Streaming Songs chart at #35 and the interactive Social Songs 100 at #5 (two of the three major Hot 50 components). You can vote for "Break the Rules" as your favorite song of the week on the Social Songs 100 chart by clicking here.
