Chart Highlights: Katy Perry "Walks On" the Chart as Runner Up

Lady Gaga's "Applause" spends an eighth straight frame atop the list with an excellent 87 spins. Although earning its lowest ranking tracking week (down two spins from a previous low last week), the song remained nearly even with its performance last week. At this rate, it could be a few more weeks before "Applause" descends the penthouse. Unfortunately for Katy Perry, "Walking On Air" (which enters with a very promising spin count) could not out rank Lady Gaga's "Applause". This could be because it opened on Tuesday, the fourth day of the tracking week.

As previously mentioned, Katy Perry opens in the runner up position (#2) with her newest promotional/buzz effort "Walking On Air". The song opens with a strong and very promising 82 spins (just off 5 from Lady Gaga's spin count). As it debuts, the song helps Katy net her biggest opening week of all time. It easily bests the weak 26 spin opening of "Roar" (only had 1 day of spins), and the extremely poor opening of "Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)" which launched with an abysmal 36 spins across 4 days (averaging 9 spins each day). Although "Roar" opened low, it only had 1 day of spins. If you compare its first 4 days of its second week, "Roar" tops the "Walking On Air" by 1 spin. If you count the first 4 days overall for each song, "Roar" is behind by 8 spins. To compare the first 4 days of the train wreck that is "Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)", "Walking On Air" is up 46 spins through the same period.

Avril Lavigne slides one rung to #3 (2-3) with four time runner up song "Rock N Roll". It manages to score 78 spins (up 6) which is even with its performance 2 weeks ago. Normally this would be enough to score the runner up slot, but "Walking On Air" had a very strong debut that blocked "Rock N Roll" by 4 spins. It's #2 streak has been briefly interrupted by Zedd's "Clarity (feat. Foxes)" and Katy Perry's "Walking On Air" for 1 week each (so far). Last week, the song defeated "Same Love (feat. Mary Lambert)" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (which spent three non-consecutive weeks at #2) for the "Most Weeks at #2 (Without Reaching #1)" title.

Vita Chambers halts at #4 with promotional single "Masquerade". In its 4th week, the song had already bested "Fix You", which took 7 weeks to climb to #3. Despite this quick rise, the song (while still growing in airplay) has tough competition from Katy Perry's "Walking On Air" and Vita's own "What If?" could open strong (in 2 weeks) and knock this song down from the top 5.

Karmin bounces 6-5 with first ever top 5 single "Acapella". "Brokenhearted" and "Hello", the singles that preceded "Acapella", peaked at #s 12 and 21 respectively. The song has yet another major increase, consistently gaining in points and positions for the entire time the song has charted on the list.

Katy Perry slides 3-6 with "Roar", lead cut from her 4th studio album, PRISM, which is set for release on October 22nd, 2013 in the United States. With 68 spins this week, "Roar" ties for (same as last week) its best week since the extremely competitive week of August 20th, 2013 when 4 songs passed 100 plays. During that week, "Roar" rose 24-15 with an grand play total of 86 (its second week).

Drake jumps 8-7 with his fourth top 10 single "Hold On, We're Going Home (feat. Majid Jordan)". He previously hit the upper tier with the #1 single "Take Care (feat. Rihanna)", "The Motto (feat. Lil Wayne)" and "Make Me Proud (feat. Nicki Minaj)" (5th if you include "What's My Name (feat. Drake) by Rihanna which hit #1 in late 2010). He has yet to score a solo top 10, as "Started From the Bottom" failed to reach the top 50, peaking at #52 (on the Bubbling Under Chart) for a single week.

Zedd's smash single "Clarity (feat. Foxes)" dips 5-8 with 62 spins (even with last week). It appears that the song's airplay total three weeks ago was slightly inflated due to the buzz surrounding the release of Zedd's new re-release album. This is what likely caused it to peak at #2 for 1 week with a solid airplay figure. The song has began its downhill slide after the small plunge that it received just a few weeks ago.

Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" dips 7-9 after spending three non-consecutive weeks at #3, one week at #4 and one week at #5. This week the song descends in airplay by more than 5 spins. It is down 6 spins from last week's total. To date the song has spent five weeks in the top 5 and eight total weeks perched among the top 10.

To round out this week's top 10, "Work B**ch" (also commonly known as "Work, Work" or "Work Bxxch" on twitter) gallops 12-10. It opened to a very underwhelming #42 positioning with an abysmal spin count. Last week the song jumped 42-12 to claim the title of "Biggest Position Jump (From One Week to the Next)". Moving up 30 slots, "Work B**ch" narrowly took the crown from Nicole Scherzinger's "Boomerang" which catapulted 48-19 (up 29 slots) in the first half of 2013. . Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" catapulted 31-3 just a few weeks ago (up 28 slots) and Ellie Goulding travelled up 28 slots as well to #4 with "I Need Your Love (feat. Calvin Harris)" last year. Most other jumps on the chart haven't come close to these four jumps mentioned above. We won't quite count this one out. It could be a big smash.

Come back this weekend for the charts!
