CDS Picks: Coldplay Returns

Here is the third installment of CDS Picks. Bringing you hot artists, albums and songs that you should know about.

In this installment (the first since the start of December), I will be focusing on the returns of a platoon of well known singers with newly released singles.

Coldplay - "Magic"
After their huge success with 2011's Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay took some time off in 2012 and 2013. In fact, in that two year span they only released a single track ("Atlas" in 2013 as part of the Catching Fire soundtrack). Now Coldplay is back with a softer sound to lead off Ghost Stories, their 6th studio album.

"Magic" is a welcome return to the roots of Coldplay and while it is very mild even for them, it is one of their best songs in years. It's soft but fresh, uplifting and surprisingly extremely catchy. The song successfully blurs the lines between pop and alternative, while mixing a bit of rock and roll in. It's a standout and a clear win for the returning band. Unfortunately, the song is not currently available to listen to on Soundcloud (it was deleted).

Jennifer Lopez - "I Luh Ya Papi (feat. French Montana)"

After releasing buzz singles "Girls" and "Same Girl" in January 2014, Jennifer Lopez is back with her  first official single since 2013's #11 peaking "Live It Up (feat. Pitbull)". Apparently she figured out that her dance themed comeback era started and ended in 2011 with the release of her 7th album Love?. She tried once in 2012 and once in 2013 to repeat the success of her 2011 comeback, but did worse each time. She's abandoned the dance floor themed tracks and is starting to focus for on a urban sound.

While her return isn't very special or interesting, it does show some growth for the singer and isn't a bad track. There is also an alternate version of the track that swaps French Montana for Big Sean and Tyga. Listen to the original version below.

Ellie Goulding - "Beating Heart"

Ellie Goulding is at the top of her game. She is soaring on the charts, has my chart's #1 best performing single ever ("Figure 8"), and is dropping songs left and right. Now she's striking back with a new single from a new movie.

"Beating Heart" is the follow up to recently released single "Goodness Gracious", and is available exclusively on the Divergent soundtrack. The track continues in the style of her second studio album, Halcyon, which displayed softer yet still fresh pop vocals.

Beyoncé - "Partition"

Beyoncé's 3rd single from her self titled 5th studio album, "Partition", is continuing to climb quickly on my chart and has exploded on radio in recent weeks. This burst comes after the confirmation of the song as the album's 3rd single and the release of its official video just this past week.

"Partition" continues to explore a previously unheard version of Beyoncé, and delivers most of its parent album's themes rolled into one quick indulgence.

That's it for this issue but here's what's coming next issue:

Cher Lloyd - "Sirens"
Margaret Berger - "Scream"
Calvin Harris - Untitled
and much more!
